FLAMINGO RESERVE
Watching
flamingos feed is possible at the Los Flamencos Flora and Fauna Sanctuary, in
the township of Camarones, a fifteen-minute drive south from Riohacha. There,
across 7,000 hectares, hundreds of these birds plunge their beaks into the
Camarones River estuary in search of brine shrimp, which gives them their pink
color. They also eat shrimp larvae and other species.
What to do?
In
Flamingo Reserve, watch pink flamingos in their natural habitat. I saw hundreds
of flamingos flying together. It was a truly sublime moment.
